Coca-Cola Adopts New Social Media Policies

Coca-Cola has updated their social media policies (or principles, as Coca-Cola is calling them).  Guess what? The policies are only 3 pages in length.  Yep, that’s it. 3 pages.  One of the largest brands in the world that sells into 200 countries with dozens of products and billions of dollars in revenue has figured out how to boil their social media policies down to only the nitty gritty.

The policy encompasses a total of 20 points that are broken out into 3 key areas:

  • 5 Core Values of the Company in the Online Social Media Community
  • 5 Expectations for Associates’ Personal Behavior in Online Social Media
  • 10 Expectations for Online Spokespeople

Adam Brown, the head of social media at Coca-Cola, explains the framework for these new guidelines in an interview with Andy Sernovitz.  If you can’t view this video, you can grab it over on YouTube.

Coca-Cola Company’s Online Social Media Principles

At New Marketing Labs I recently had someone from a small to medium company contact me and asked if we could review their social media policy. While we didn’t end up working with the company, their social media policy was 41 pages and 3 slide decks. I think my buddy C.C. Chapman summarized it the best after he tweeted out the link to Conrad Lisco’s post about Coca-Cola’s new policies:

For Coca-Cola, this new policy was updating an older set of guidelines that they had already in place.  But, over the course of 2010 we’ll continue to see more brands adopting social media policies.  What I found really interesting is how Adam talked about that it was a combination of several teams that came together to boil their social media policy into a 3 page document meant to serve as a set of 5 commitments from the company and 15 guidelines.

Has your company adopted a social media policy yet?  What are your thoughts on Coca-Cola’s new policies?

Gone Mobile

You can now access a mobile version of [justinrlevy.com] when you use a touch mobile device such as an iPhone or Droid.  Previously this blog had utilized the Carrington theme to create a mobile version of the site.  But, I just switched over to WPtouch to create a fuller experience.  Carrington had many of the features that WPtouch has but I like the look, feel and design of WPtouch a little more.  It displays photos, Tweetmeme and Disqus tightly as well as the basic features of the site including tabs, tags, categories, date/time, and more.

What really impressed me about WPtouch was the level of customization the theme allows from the Settings menu.  In my previous experience with themes or plugins that created mobile versions, they usually were limited in their customization options, if they allowed customization at all.  Of course, you could pay to have a custom mobile version created but who wants to spend money if they don’t have to.

To highlight the high level of customization that the user is allowed, I took the below screenshot of the just the icon selection menu.  This menu allows you to choose the icons that will be displayed for your different tabs.

That is just one of the many customizable features that you can tweak and have fun with.

So, if you’re looking to create a mobile version of your blog/website and you’re on WordPress, head over and grab WPtouch.

Social Media Jungle at CES

Are you getting ready to make the yearly trek to Las Vegas to check out all things electronics at CES?  If you are, you should consider attending the Social Media Jungle being hosted by Jeff Pulver.  I’ve had the opportunity to speak at a few of the Social Media Jungle events that Jeff has put on in the past, including the event at CES 2009.  What I love about them is that Jeff encourages the speakers to keep the event a “Powerpoint-free zone”.  This creates a much looser and more interactive environment.

Last year we had a great group of people who I learned so much from in just a short amount of time.  If you’re able to attend, I’m sure you won’t be disappointed.

Want to know who else is stopping by to speak?  Check out the packed schedule below:

Wednesday, January 6 LVCC, North Hall, N256
(event runs from 8:30 AM to 12:15 PM)

8:30-9:00 a.m. “Real-Time Social Networking” – An opportunity to network with the speakers and delegates attending Social Media Jungle.

9:00-9:10 a.m. Welcome to the Jungle, Jeff Pulver

9:10-9:30 a.m. Consumer Marketing in the State of NOW, Jeff Pulver

9:30-9:45 a.m. Social Media Reputation, Dave Taylor

9:45-9:55 a.m. Brand Engagement in Social Media, Chris Rauschnot

9:55-10:20 a.m. Listen & Hear, Jeffrey Sass

10:20-10:30 a.m. Building Trust in Social Media, Eric Weaver

10:30-10:50 a.m. What’s Next in Social Media? Robert Scoble

10:50-11:00 a.m. Social Media ROI, Ben Grossman
