How a Bill Becomes a Law

I am fond of infographics because they help to convey a lot of information or complicated data in an easy, digestible way.  This infographic explains the long and complicated way of how a bill becomes law.  The infographic was made by Mike Wirth as his submission for the Design in America competition by Sunlight Labs.

I'm a big fan, too. After reading this, I talked to someone in our legislative affairs office. Turns out MA has something along these lines, though not as “hungry caterpillar” visually pleasing (funny, I totally loved that book!). Anyway, here's the one we found that the state has: Legislative Process Overview.

Things like this are certainly helpful to show people who say, “Can't you change the law on that? How hard can it be?” My fear, though, is that even when nicely represented graphically it still looks super-complicated and might turn off people who want to get involved. But, it's better than the alternative of trying to navigate the system without the helpful graphic!

I agree! Infographics are a great way to communicate hard or long,
    complicated processes!

Well, then, let's work on thinking about a way to better help communicate
hard to understand processes for the community :)

You would have loved an infographic I helped create when I worked for the state in 2005 regarding how permitting looked for the average community back before Chapter 43D was passed. It was nasty.
