Checking and Recalibrating Your Goals

goalsetting

It’s already a couple weeks into the 2nd half of the year. Can you believe it? The first half of the year blew by so fast. Some days felt like they would never end while other entire weeks flew by before coffee could even be poured. It seems that just a few days ago we were all sitting around making our New Year’s resolutions and setting our goals for the upcoming year.

Earlier today I spent a little while going through the goals I set at the beginning of the year. Overall, I’m pretty happy with where I am with my goals for this year. There were a couple setbacks due to being busy at both New Marketing Labs and Caminito Argentinean Steakhouse. However, I was able to check off some and I made action plans on how to attack a few more to get a couple small victories over the next several weeks. I also scheduled myself a reminder to check in and recalibrate again at the end of 3rd quarter.

Now that we’re fast approaching Fall, have you checked in on those goals that you set? How are you doing with them? Are there any that you can check off? Any that you need to recalibrate?

    Hey Justin,

Yes I do check on my goals on a regular basis. And that's what I teach my SMARTSTART members to do as well. We do our goal setting for the year on Groundhog Day (Feb. 2). We call them our Groundhog Day Resolutions. [David Seah, a designer whose work I love, came up with this concept and we liked it so much, we adopted it for our coaching community.]

SMARTSTARTers check on their goals once a month: March 3, April 4, May 5, June 6, July 7, August 8, September 9, October 10, November 11, December 12. [that part was David's idea too].

On January 1, when everyone else is making New Year's Resolutions, we make our Gratitude List and focus on it exclusively for 30 days. Then we are in a great frame of mind for Groundhog Day work. [That last one was my own idea and people seem to have really embraced it.]

I wanted to come up with something that would take people away from starting out the exercise focusing on all the things they didn't accomplish or do the previous year. That is not a good way to set one's goals. And it's counter-productive.

So our first goal-setting exercise is writing The Victory List. We celebrate the hell out of that first. Then we work out the goals for the coming year and set them up as the Groundhog Day Resolutions to be reviewed per the schedule above.

It's a fun process! I can personally recommend it.

    Hi Justin,

there is great quote, in that matter:”Plans are of little importance, but planning is essential” – Winston Churchill

So its important to keep on planning and validate out progress, and thank you for reminding us to ask on our progress.

i would say that work on the balance was my goal, and i still working hard to achieve it… its not trivial to change something in your personality in order to grow from it..
