How to Use Google Reader Like a Pro

Yesterday you learned how to become a Twitter power user and today I want to show you how you can consume tons of information from your RSS feeds in a short period of time.  I think this is a critical skill especially if you want to follow a lot of different feeds and don’t want to spend your entire day doing it.  One of the questions you’ll hear asked of the A-listers is how do they manage their time throughout the day with all of the content they create and that they consume.  This is one of those ways.

My preference for an RSS reader is Google Reader.  I like Google Reader because it allows me to use keyboard shortcuts so that it increases the speed at which I can go through my feeds.  It also allows me to link up with other people and read what they find interesting and choose to share with me.  This cuts down on some of the feeds I have to subscribe to and also exposes me to other new feeds that may be of interest to me.  I currently subscribe to about 200 or so feeds and usually scan/read between 300-600 posts per day.  Of those I try to share the best and leave comments on a handful of them.

Two videos helped me to increase the speed at which I’m able to consume this much information and I think they will be helpful to you as well, especially if you’re just starting out.  Check out these two videos, one from Chris Brogan and the other of Robert Scoble being interviewed by Tim Ferriss.

Setting Sail for 2009 on a Pirate Ship

pirateshipSo, over the past few weeks I have been really mean to all of my friends on Twitter.  I have been teasing them about a “secret project” that I was working on and kept promising to tell everyone what I was up to.  Starting mid-week I began leaking little bits of info such as that I needed to look for an apartment in Boston.  Well, today I’m happy to announce that the secret is out!

I have decided to set sail aboard a pirate ship with Chris Brogan.  We have just raised the sails and pushed away from the dock  This pirate ship is New Marketing Labs, our new media marketing agency and educational company.  In my role as General Manager, I will be working hand-in-hand with Chris and will be responsible for the operations and execution of our agency work with our amazing clients.  I will also be responsible for assisting in the delivery of our educational events, including our New Marketing Summit events, New Marketing Bootcamps, webinars and a host of our awesome ideas that we’re busy coming up with.  Over the next weeks and months we will have exciting announcements which will be my new “secret projects” that I tease all of you with.

While all of this is going to be A TON of work, I’m looking forward to hustlin and working my head off.  This is an amazing opportunity and I thank Chris for believing in me.  I can’t wait to learn from the teacher.  I also look forward to working with all of the wonderful people that I’m going to get to meet.
